Dress Code

Dallas Lutheran School perceives education as a formal activity and has, therefore, adopted a conservative approach to the type of clothing appropriate for school dress. As we work and interact at Dallas Lutheran, it is our desire to place our attention on the “inner-workings” of people rather than their outward appearance. Therefore, the dress code of Dallas Lutheran minimizes the focus on fashion issues and moves students to a degree of conformity. Basically, school clothes should do the following:
  • Reflect modesty (which includes buttoning shirts at the second button)
  • Be neat and clean
  • Convey a “dressed up” appearance
Hair Length and styles follow various fads or trends. Here also, we will be conservative. Specific hairstyles that follow passing fads will be decided upon as they arise. However, the following guidelines will be followed:
  • No dying or bleaching of hair beyond a natural color that is deemed distracting
  • No facial hair for boys
  • Boys’ hair should not fall below the top of the ear or over  the top of the collar
  • Hair should not be lower than eyebrow level in front
  • No shaving of any part of the head beyond what would be considered part of a “traditional” haircut (i.e., a flattop is acceptable)
  • No extreme contrasts in hair length between the side and top of the head.
Body piercing (beyond ear piercing for girls) and tattoos are unacceptable “accessories” for DLS students. Writing on skin is not permitted.

We reserve the right to decide what is appropriate dress and which hairstyles are appropriate for Dallas Lutheran students. We recommend that a student and parent consult the Principal before wearing a hairstyle that may be questionable. (Pictures can be helpful in the decision-making process.)

STUDENTS DO NOT HAVE TO PURCHASE ALL ITEMS LISTED. DLS sweatshirts are available for purchase in the fall at the school.  ONLY an official sweatshirt may be worn with the uniform in place of a sweater.

STUDENTS ARE ADVISED THAT THE DRESS CODE IS IN EFFECT WHILE THEY ARE ON CAMPUS. When an activity warrants changing (for example: painting scenery for a play, working on the fields, etc.) the student will be given permission for appropriate changes. THE DRESS CODE IS IN EFFECT UNTIL STUDENTS LEAVE CAMPUS unless they are involved in school-sponsored extracurricular activities. For a school sponsored off-campus activity, SENIOR DRESS CODE is to be followed if the Parker requirement is waived.

Students should listen carefully to announcements made when special dress days (i.e., “jeans day”) are planned. If a student chooses not to dress according to the plan of a special day, the regular school dress (coordinated separates) is to be worn.
